Chanelle is a self taught artist who only works on genuine animal skulls. She hand carves each skull, and each skull has a unique design. No replicas are made. Her work brings femininity to the masculine form of the skull.
In the middle of nowhere, between thousands of Aloes and Rose-quarts, runs a river - The Mighty Orange. This magnificent stretch of fertile soil we find running through the Kalahari Desert in the Northern Cape of South Africa, is also know as the Green Belt or Green Kalahari.
Chanelle, her husband, 11 year old son and 11 dogs live in a 1930 restored old farm house. Her studio is also a restored building, that used to be the Post Office of Geelkop Settlement.
There is a fine science behind preparing and preserving the skull to become carve ready and can take months to finally get there. But it is all worth it when she lays the skull on the carving table and begin to create.
